Why I built Private Dictation

I found that I often had things I wanted to say but whenever I typed them out, they came out sounding strangely and not in the voice I had wanted. Typing is also much slower than just speaking and took a lot of time. Over the last few years, voice-to-text has gotten better than it ever has been. I was incredibly excited to start using voice-to-text and have the words on the screen look much more natural and closer to what I meant compared to typing.

Voice-to-text has been good for a while, but it has been either relatively expensive or prohibitively hard to run on your own machine. That meant I have been a subscriber to multiple voice-to-text tools over the years. Many of them work quite well, but it felt silly to pay a monthly subscription for technology that can run on my Mac. I built Private Dictation so people can dictate on their own machines, with a high-quality app they purchase once, for a reasonable cost, rather than paying a subscription forever to keep using voice-to-text.
